Assignment: Interactive Data Visualisation for Web
Your task is to develop one visually appealing and communicative interactive data
dataset.(You can find the dataset source in the end).
You should explore the contents of the data set and display the data graphically using the
core principles of interaction design, data graphics and cartography. Your resulting interface
should fill the screen space with one or more data visualisations, with some form of interaction
beyond the default interactions provided by the libraries you use. The interface must
communicate a clear message about your data to a defined audience.
Note, the focus of this assignment is to create an interface to present the dataset in your
chosen scope and/or geographic area. You are not expected to perform any in-depth data
modelling, although data selection will be an important part of the design process to ensure
that only relevant data is available to the user. You can choose the topic that you prefer,
but please choose a more suitable topic.
You should create a webpage called index.html, which is the file that the
marker will open when they mark your work. The zip file may also contain any

explore these libraries in more depth. You can also embed Tableau graphics in

and creating “raw” graphics using a low-level library such as p5.js (Links to an

You are not expected to develop a web site. A single HTML page is sufficient.
You must submit the following file:
1. A zipped file containing an index.html file and any other resources required for the
acknowledgment of any code used or adapted from other sources.
2. A PDF design summary report, not inside your zipped file, containing the following:
(1). A one-page summary of your design;
(2). An appendix that clearly describes all of the sources used in your design.
In your one-page summary you are free to provide extra information about your design to
highlight any background work, or to assist the user in understanding and/or using your
You are free to design any type of data graphic. You do not need to design a graphic or map
that contains spatial data, although you are most welcome to do so if you wish.
You are encouraged to research widely, to find interesting and engaging ways of constructing
your data graphic. This might be where most of your time is spent.
Think carefully about your use of visual variables. Your summary and interface must be
carefully designed. If your interface requires a page of dense text to explain, it is unlikely that
the interface itself is well-designed and intuitive. Thus, it is not recommended that you use
the design summary for more than the briefest explanation of how to use your interface.
The focus in this Assignment is to create a data visualisation interface, NOT
analyse a big dataset. That’s why we suggest to use pre-packaged data which
has already been formatted ready for visualisation. You are free to choose
your own data source, or use a dataset from one of the following suggested
