For citing in your paper, there are two main ways to do this:

What we will call “in-text” citations

These are citations where you introduce the
information

An example would be “According to Brown (2010)…”

These can cover a few uninterrupted sentences
Parenthetical citations

These are citations that are at the end of a sentence

This belongs ONLY to the sentence it is attached to

For example: “Night of the Living Deadpool has been
suggested as a perfect comic (Tomlinson, 2020).”

• To further clarify, in-text citations resemble the following:
According to Jones (2014), there are an array of issues related to…
Based on work by Xie and Shauman (2003), differences in math performance…
A PA N O T E S
• And parenthetical citations resemble the following:
The quokka is a friendly creature because it lacks natural predators (Barrett, 2013).
In Western contexts, people often sort more obviously into gendered fields in their educational
and occupational choices (Bradley, 2000; Charles & Bradley, 2009; Correll, 2005).

• What do you notice about this example?

In Western contexts, people often sort more obviously into gendered fields in their educational
and occupational choices (Bradley, 2000; Charles & Bradley, 2009; Correll, 2005).
• We can use more than one source and separate them with a semicolon
• When the citation is parenthetical, we use “&” instead of “and” when an article has more than
one author

• When citing information, keep in mind that all you really need is the author(s)’s last name(s) and
the year the article was published
• The rest of the information necessary to find the article is in your reference citation
• You do not need to include the article title or the journal in your paragraphs!

You need to write an in-text citation, introducing the idea with “according to…” and using an
article by James Smith, Renee Carter, and Nicole Jimenez. The article was written in 2013 and
published in Contexts. How do you introduce your paragraph?
I N – T E X T A N D PA R E N T H E T I C A L
C I TAT I O N S
Practicing APA Citations
You want to write a citation with all of the pertinent information in parentheses at the end of
your sentence. You are using an article from Gender & Society written by Linda Taylor, Albert
Yee, and Trisha Brown. The article was published in 2003. Rewrite the following sentence to
include the appropriate citation:
One study suggests that watching movies with friends can deepen one’s understanding and
experience.
C I T I N G A N D AT T R I B U T I N G W O R K
• As a note on your reference page – you should list articles in alphabetical order based on the first
author!
• Do not change the order in which the authors are listed!
• This applies to multiple references in parenthetical citations as well
• For example: “Video games tend to be culturally associated with male audiences (Chess
2014; Kuzenkoff & Rose 2012; Salter & Blodgett 2012; Schoenfeld, Bredow, & Huston
2012; Shaw 2014).”

• Notes
• There are some peculiarities to citations in APA. Notice
in the citation that you list authors’ first initials, the year
in parentheses, the title of the article with mostly
lowercase*, the title of the journal (periodical) in title
case and italics, the volume number in italics (but not
the issue!).

• Notes
• *The exceptions to capitalization in the article title
include:
• After punctuation (period, colon, question mark,
exclamation point, but NOT COMMA!)
• If you have a proper noun (e.g., the name of a
person, place, or thing)

• Additional notes and reminders:
• Do not worry about links to the articles or DOI number
• References should be listed in the bibliography alphabetically
• Do not change the order of the authors as they are listed in the article!
• Order all references by FIRST AUTHOR, but within the citation, author order stays the
same
